Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period Has Its Own Rules and Opportunities for Agents

While the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period has passed, another Medicare enrollment period is upon us as the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs through March 31.

Hopefully as a Medicare health insurance agent, you have recovered from the grind of AEP and you are ready for new challenges coming in 2026.

What is the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period? First, it applies to beneficiaries who are enrolled in Medicare Advantage. Second, during this special enrollment period, MA clients can switch MA plans or even convert to Original Medicare and a prescription drug plan.

Clients can only make one change during this period, and if a client is not in a Medicare Advantage plan, that client cannot participate.

Many people are eligible to make changes during this enrollment period because around half of the population on Medicare is enrolled in an MA plan. Also, awareness of this “second” Medicare enrollment opportunity is not well known among potential clients, and it gives you an opportunity to help people make changes to their Medicare coverage as their trusted advisor.

Don’t Market but Listen to Clients

CMS rules do not allow agents to knowingly target or send unsolicited marketing materials that reference Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. That is why it is a lower-key enrollment period. You may, however, assist a client who initiates a conversation about being unhappy with their current plan.

This is why it is important for agents to be visible and readily available. You need to be known as the person to talk to for those turning 65 or those on Medicare. Just because AEP is over, this is not a time to go dark and not be out in your community.

You want to be easy to contact and always be educated about Medicare. That way if someone is having an issue with their current plan, they can easily turn to you for help.

Don’t Treat It as an Afterthought

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is different than the fall AEP, yet it represents an opportunity for agents to assist clients and keep the relationship strong. Don’t overlook the opportunity to help seniors seeking better Medicare coverage, especially if they can still make changes to coverage. Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period can be a way to do that.

Agents should increase visibility efforts and be aware of plans that are popular in your area. Now is the time to embrace an opportunity that can result in happier clients.
